More about Matas...

Hello, my name is Matas Merkelis. I am a 22-year-old medical and veterinary biochemist. I graduated from the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (2020-2024).

For the last few years I have been working at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, Institute of Neurosciences, Biochemistry Laboratory and Laboratory of Pharmacological Regulation of Pathological Processes and Drug Metabolism. I have worked with various cell cultures and studied molecular factors involved in Parkinson's disease, such as neurotoxicity of amyloidogenic proteins and neuroinflammation.

During this time I have attended and presented 2 poster presentations at international conferences related to neurodegenerative diseases. I have also gained experience in medical biochemistry and diagnostics during my studies and additional internships in hospitals and private medical laboratories.

I am interested in biochemistry, chemistry, applied medicine, pharmacy and pharmacology, biotechnology, neurodegeneration, neurosciences, neurology and scientific research-related topics.

My bachelor's thesis titled "Investigation of the synergistic effect of viral RNA mimetics with amyloidogenic proteins" was supervised by Dr. Silvija Jankevičiūtė (Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Neuroscience Institute, Laboratory of Biochemistry).
