🧠 Menopause changes the brain. We're only beginning to understand how

Most conversations about #menopause focus on hot flashes, sleep disruption, hormonal shifts. But there's a less-told story happening in the brain.

Estrogen isn’t just a reproductive hormone. It actively shapes brain function, supporting memory, regulating mood, and helping maintain cellular health. When levels decline, that support system shifts.

For many women, this results in brain fog, difficulty concentrating, or subtle changes in memory. Over time, these changes may be linked to a higher risk of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, where women account for nearly two-thirds of cases.

The reasons are complex and still being unravelled, involving metabolism, inflammation, and how brain cells respond to stress. Understanding these mechanisms is a key focus of our work in our lab.
